My first game in Godot out of tutorial hell. I finally felt I had just enough knowledge to make something. It's not much and there isn't really any game play yet. In the spirit of making anything and making it small. This game is currently in V0 (i.e. no gameplay loop yet). The game is now in V1.

Posting for archival purposes. Logging my project details as I progress in my learning.

Devlog in what I learned so far:

V0 :

  • How to make the camera follow the player
  • How to add sprites, how to animate them
  • How to add tilemap assets then scale and place them
  • How to play with ordering and z-level to make the pika look like it goes inside its home
  • How to play sounds on certain actions
  • How to play background music
  • How to change player speed when different tiles (i.e. going through mud)
  • Up next:
    • Picking up flowers and bringing them home
    • Start screen
    • Don't fall off the screen

V1:

  • How to create a global state that autoloads
  • Global state allowed me to implement an inventory system to pick flowers
  • How to change scenes/rooms so my Pika can go inside their home
  • How to have a simple dialogue system so Pika can talk
  • How to have dialogue follow my player
  • How to implement an HUD (heads up display) for displaying energy and inventory information
  • How to loop music so that if you're playing for a long time the track doesn't end
  • Made my Pika have a slight rotation when jumping to make it seem more jump-like
  • Implemented my first "enemy"
  • Created my first ever shader for the collected flowers inside the home, still need to learn more about this
  • Up next:
    • Improvements to gameplay
    • Make poop fall when Pika crashes into an enemy
    • Better end of game state, make Pika fall asleep
    • Maybe player has to place flowers in
    • Rolling credits perhaps
